Top Tips On Cleaning Your Mattress

Mattresses only have an average life expectancy of 8 years. After 8 years, it becomes time to change out your mattress. It usually means that it has seen better days, has started to lose its comfort and maybe even its shape. But it also means that it has spent 8 years supporting your body while you sleep. Collecting bacteria as you sleep, and harbouring it. So how can you keep your mattress more hygienic before it is time to replace it.

Collecting Dirt

When we change our beds, we very often forget that it is not only the bedsheets that collect dirt, it is also our mattresses. So keeping them clean, is just as important as cleaning our bedsheets.
At a minimum, we should be hoovering our mattresses as often as possible. With many people recommending that we hoover them every time we change our sheets. Being realistic means that we know this isn't going to happen for everyone. So just make sure you do it as often as possible (once a year isn't enough though!). Remember, if you have flipped your mattress, it might be worth hoovering both sides.

Stained Mattresses

Over time, mattresses pick up a number of stains. From spilt drinks, excess sweat and anything else. While these are covered with a sheet, hiding them from sight, it doesn't mean that the bacteria isn't embedded. So you might need to do a spot of wet cleaning.
To remove a stain, you want to try and use as little moisture as possible to ensure that the mattress dries effectively. Use a combination of water and detergent with a sponge, rather than a spray bottle. Work from the outer edge of the stain and use circular motions working inwards until the stain fades. If you are concerned about using too much moisture, you can leave it to dry, then come back and have another go at it.
For more intense stains, you can use a carpet attachment on a wet vac. However, please remember that you need to allow your mattress to fully dry before mankind your bed or using your mattress. So be prepared to leave your windows open and to sleep in the spare bed for a night or two.
