Refresh Your Home With Pantone’s Colour Of The Year 2020

Posted on - 13th January 2020

Back in December, Pantone announced their Colour of the Year for 2020. While last year it was animating and life-affirming ‘Living Coral' in 2019, this year has moved to a darker, richer hue: Classic Blue.

When talking about the choice for 2020, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman said:

“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on. Imbued with a deep resonance, Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”

About Classic Blue

The return to Classic Blue as Colour of the Year 2020 signals a shift in the interior design space to traditional and classical decor. In fact, it would be more apt to call this decision a ‘homecoming’. A return to traditional values and an affirmation of confidence and stability. Even more so when the very first Pantone Colour of the Year, back in 1999 was another shade of blue - Cerulean.

How To Use Classic Blue in Your Home

The beauty of Classic Blue in interior design is its versatility. Rich, dark and sophisticated, it’s a timeless shade that works effortlessly in tandem with other colours.

Look to your upholstery

An easy way to incorporate the shade into your living space is by large pieces of furniture. For example, a large velvet sofa in Classic Blue would look subtly sophisticated, especially when paired with warm-toned soft furnishings and accessories such as throws and scatter cushions.

If living it large isn’t your style, a statement accent chair or armchair will have just the same impact and can be dressed in just the same way.

Make it a feature

If you favour a more minimalist approach to interior design, then a striking feature wall in Classic Blue is just the thing. This works particularly well in your living room or bedroom as an accent colour, especially when paired with crisp white and neutral grey and even black.

If you’re feeling really bold, go hard and adorn the walls of your home office in Classic Blue. Then contrast with lighter shades, prints, and gold and silver accents.

Accent your furniture

From kitchen islands and cupboards to bathroom cabinets and sideboards, your furniture offers plenty of opportunities to add a splash of colour.

Classic blue would work particularly well in bright white bathrooms, where the shining metallics of your plumbing contrast with the almost matte nature of the shade.

Take a softer approach

Classic Blue works in a range of textures, which makes choosing it for the colour of your soft furnishings a huge winner. Think throws, rugs, carpets, wall-hangings and more - the only limit is your imagination. You can even extend Classic Blue to your table wear and ornaments if you like.

An easy addition, in particular, is a textured rug. These look effortlessly luxurious and can be used in pretty much any room of the home for great effect.
