4 Questions To Consider When Buying A New Bed
Posted on - 22nd June 2020
An average person spends around 26 years of their life sleeping and a further 7 years trying to sleep. For those reasons alone, buying a new bed isn’t to be taken lightly! Getting the right set up in your bedroom is crucial to make sure you spend more of your nights snoozing and less time tossing, turning and wishing for sleep.
But why is sleep so important? Well, sleep is incredibly restorative for both a brains and bodies. When we get enough sleep we feel better in ourselves and our mental health improves. Sleeping better also can improve our physical wellbeing, helping us to better regulate our weight and build immunity.
Among many other things, the COVID-19 crisis and subsequent lockdown has had a significant effect on how long we are spending sleeping and our sleep quality. This is due to a number of reasons. One of the biggest reasons we have failed to catch enough zzz’s in lockdown is anxiety and stress about the situation. When your head is filled with worry it can be reaily difficult to switch off. Another reason is the disruption of our routines. Having the kids at home, working from home or being furloughed can have a significant impact on your day to day routines that carries through to your sleep.
So how can you reclaim your evenings and fill them with the right amount of sleep? Well, a good place to start is with your bed frame and mattress. In this article, we’re going to look at things you should consider when buying a new bed to help you find the right set up that promotes a restful night’s sleep.
What To Consider When Shopping For A New Bed
What’s Your Type?
First of all, what kind of bed do you prefer? There are a whole range of different bed sizes and styles to choose from, so it’s a good idea to have a few key ‘wants’ or ‘needs’ in mind. For example, when it comes to bedsteads do you favour metal, wood or upholstered fabric designs?
Take a look around your bedroom as it is now. What kind of style is your decor? Warm and cosy, minimalistic and modern or something else entirely? Your bed is the centre of your bedroom and will instantly draw the eye, so be sure you’re chosen style matches the aesthetic that you’re going for so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb!
What’s Your Budget?
Next up, your budget. Of course, we would all like unlimited amounts of money to throw at decorating our homes, but that’s rarely the case. So think carefully about how much you're prepared to spend.
It’s worth remembering that your bed is a place you spend considerable amounts of time. So while it may be tempting to skimp, you’re better off going for best value rather than the cheapest.
If you’re working with a budget, our best advice would be to allocate a bit more money to your mattress over the frame if you buy separately. That being said, many beds (such as divan sets) come with both bedstead and mattress and offer great value for money.
Finally, when you’re setting out your budget don’t forget about the headboard. Headboards protect the wall behind your bed from getting marked and they’re a great finishing touch, but they are often sold separately so have a budget in mind there too before you start shopping around!
What Size Do You Need?
When it comes to beds, it’s a general rule that bigger is better. But, of course, we don’t always have the space to buy the biggest bed our budget stretches to. That being said, it is important to consider the size of your bed and whether it will be a good fit for you or your partner.
If you can, give a bed a test drive at a showroom to see if it fits and how it feels. If you can’t do that, get the tape measure out and measure both you and your partner. A bed should be around 5 inches longer than the tallest user, and for maximum comfort each person should be able to lie down with their arms behind their head without touching the other person’s elbows!
UK bed sizes generally fall into the following categories: small single, single, small double, double, king size, super king. If you’re buying a bed online be sure to check the measurements of your bedroom against those of the actual model you’re buying - it is no fun to take receipt of a new bed only to find it doesn’t fit!
What Extras Would You Like?
Lots of beds come with all sorts of bells and whistles nowadays. From TV beds to ottoman beds and those with storage drawers underneath. If extras like this are important to you then be sure to look out for them or ask about them on your search.
You’d be amazed at what you might find when you shop around for the bed of your dreams.
